A Nurse Practitioner is trained to manage approximately 85% of the patient conditions that a family practice physician normally treats, working in conjunction with a physician to provide care to their patients. The care provided is comprehensive and includes diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness and disease, prescribing appropriate medications, preventive services and health education to patients and families. Nurse Practitioners can order and interpret laboratory tests, x-rays, screening tests and developmental tests to identify patients' health problems, risk factors and strengths. They can also refer patients with conditions outside their scope of practice to the appropriate health care specialist.
